There are physical limitations to how high this can grow.

1.) The grid can't handle more than a certain % of intermittent resources before the power swings cause frequency and voltage collapse and batteries can only smooth so much. You need a reliable core of conventional generation to keep the system stable.

2.) All of the best locations for wind and solar are being eaten up first, like picking the low-hanging fruit. Every incremental addition is more costly to construct and produces less. Just like hydroelectric, there are only so many spots where it's worth it before it becomes non-viable.
